I have not used gas powered or electric machines in my garden in ten or more years.  At age 60 I used a square spade to break up and turnover a 100 ft. by 200 ft. hard packed field where heavy equipment and trucks had been going for years. I did it to see what was physically required to do the work. I then covered that soil with tree service wood chips normally taken to the landfill. I covered to 8 inch depth let it weather one year then raked it back to plant my crops in the soil under the chips. Since then I have added another 6 inches of chips. All this organic matter is now mostly soil and each year I add more to it. Weeds are easy to remove by hand. This past year I have begun using row cover between my vegetable rows. I have a food forest in development in all the "waste" areas on the perimeter of my homesite. I now am teaching others based on the premise there will be no commercial agriculture soil additives or mechanized equipment in the years ahead. It can be done but it requires starting now and using determination.
