As coronavirus quietly spread, a nondescript nursing home became the deadliest hot spot in the U.S.

KIRKLAND, Wash. — The final weeks of February brought an unusual flurry of 911 calls from the Life Care Center of Kirkland. A lieutenant at the local fire department suggested alerting county health officials: The nursing home might have been hit with another run of the flu.

Emergency crews dispatched as they would with any routine call, without hesitation, said Fire Chief Joseph Sanford.
