There are some who believe that, in order to win enough votes to send Donald Trump back to the hellhole where he belongs, Democrats must appeal to members of the president’s base on their terms, in an environment where they feel safe and don’t have to worry a socialist will show up and steal all their money, or the gay task force will make them bake a cake for a lesbian wedding. In other words, they think that the Democratic candidates for president must appear on Fox News. Elizabeth Warren is not one of those people.

On Thursday, the senator from Massachusetts announced that, unlike Bernie Sanders, who held a town hall on Fox News last month, and Pete Buttigieg, who will do the same this Sunday, she turned down the network’s invitation, on account of the place being a toxic cesspool. “Fox News is a hate-for-profit racket that gives a megaphone to racists and conspiracists,” Warren wrote on Twitter. “It’s designed to turn us against each other, risking life and death consequences, to provide cover for the corruption that’s rotting our government and hollowing out our middle class. Hate-for-profit works only if there’s profit, so Fox News balances a mix of bigotry, racism, and outright lies with enough legit journalism to make the claim to advertisers that it’s a reputable news outlet. It’s all about dragging in ad money—big ad money. But Fox News is struggling as more and more advertisers pull out of their hate-filled space. A Democratic town hall gives the Fox News sales team a way to tell potential sponsors it’s safe to buy ads on Fox—no harm to their brand or reputation (spoiler: It’s not).” Whew.

In order to take a stand against a network that has made one Australian very rich by peddling conspiracy theories like George Soros is funding a caravan of asylum seekers marching toward the U.S. border, and, at present, answers to Donald Trump, Warren said she will “fight back” by not asking “millions of Democratic primary voters to tune into an outlet that profits from racism and hate in order to see our candidates—especially when Fox will make even more money adding our valuable audience to their ratings numbers.” She notes that she’s done 131 interviews and taken over 1,100 questions from the press since January and, hey, Fox News is welcome to cover her events just like any other media organization. “But a Fox News town hall adds money to the hate-for-profit machine. To which I say: hard pass.”
